VINE STREET RUMBLE = STANDING OVATION!
Vine Street Rumble performed Saturday Sept. 7th for the International Association of Jazz Record Collectors conference at the Marriott 45th and Main. The two hour concert was full of energy and ended with an incredibly vocal standing ovation from the audience. It was an honor to play for this group of jazz enthusiasts, and it was particularly wonderful to "wow" such an assembly. It was truly a great evening!
VINE STREET RUMBLE ROARS INTO 18th and VINE!
Libby Hanssen - Kansas City Star - August 25, 2013
What exactly is Kansas City jazz? That’s a frequently debated term, given the profusion of talent and myriad influences inscribing the scene today, but it would be difficult to imagine that many people don’t immediately think of the swinging, blues-based dance tunes of the 1930s and ’40s, spawned from the seedy nightclub environment of the dismissively anti-Prohibitionist Pendergast era.
From that environment emerged the infusive rhythms and hot horn riffs that have marked the town for decades. Kansas City’s Vine Street Rumble Jazz Orchestra aimed to re-create this irrepressible, irresistible pulse Friday night with its debut performance in the American Jazz Museum’s Blue Room.
This is no living history museum band.
Led by Kent Rausch, it displayed tuneful solos backed by tight ensemble playing and consistent tempos with either a sturdy four-beat measure or a chunky two-feel. The 13-piece group overflowed the Blue Room stage into the table area.
There was a packed house for the first set, with fans squeezing out the happy-hour population for prime seats and late-comers relegated to standing against the wall as the staff scrounged more chairs..........
"kcjazzlark" - jazz blog - kcjazzlark.blogspot.com August 25, 2013
With every seat filled, people pressed against the walls, more streaming in (“We have a group of 17,” one host alerted another), The Blue Room exploded to the big band sounds of Jumpin’ at the Woodside, the way it was heard in this neighborhood 75 years ago.
Kansas City’s Vine Street Rumble is a new big band dedicated to recreating for Kansas City in 2013 the music which defined Kansas City in the 1930s, just as it was originally performed.
Much of the book is built on transcriptions of classic Count Basie, Bennie Moten, and Mary Lou Williams-arranged Andy Kirk sides for which, often, no written arrangements exist. Here is the chance to hear the way Bennie Moten’s band wickedly swung Toby, not through your iPhone headphones (yes, the Moten side in on my iPhone) but live, with the big band blowing just a few feet away..........
VSR PERFORMS PRIVATE EVENTS FOR FREEDOM PEAK FINANCIAL (Sept. 24) and THE KEMPER MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART GALA (Oct. 12).
